James - Zedd, Clarity
Even as it’s a simple song, it has lyrics that can stir up your emotions. It’s a really complete song and the female vocal expresses the song’s bittersweet quality well.
Moon - Naul, Memory of the Wind
Since it was recorded analog, it has a really warm instrumental sound. The melody and lyrics are sad, so when you listen to it, you become immersed.
Sooyoon - Brown Eyed Soul, You
Naul’s bittersweet vocals lend well to the melody. It’s a song I personally like the feel of. I can also relate to the lyrics.
We saw you last year at <Cosmo Rock Concert>, and we’re meeting you again. In that time you’ve released a mini album called <Drawing the Line>. How’s the reaction?
We’ve had a schedule every day so we’ve been busy but we haven’t actually felt any difference in our daily lives yet. The feedback from the album is good, and we’ve felt that we gained a lot of fans. To us, the biggest change we can see is especially in the increase in the number of fans who come to support us at the music stations. Our sense of responsibility has also grown; as much as there are increasing numbers of people who like our music, so shall we reciprocate with even better music. We’ve started feeling like “this is what it’s like (to be recognized).”
After listening to the songs on this album, they’re really fun!! It’s the first mini album that you’ve self-composed, so which part did you focus on working on?More than anything, we think that the fact that it was our first (album) that had the most meaning. So rather than at first having music with one color, we wanted to show a wider spectrum and make an album that various fans can enjoy. The synergy with Producer Kim Taesung was really good. We gathered in one house like we were all great friends and got to work; it was comfortable. It was enjoyable work.
Was there any difficulty in working on this album?We worried a lot, wondering if people would empathize with and like the songs we worked on. While thinking “is this the right music?” we took courses on it, and it wasn’t easy. But it was okay because we all thought that if we wanted to be creative people, we should take the them.
You’ve had fans since before debut, when you uploaded videos onto youtube, people who liked and have been waiting for Royal Pirates’ music. What do you think is RP’s charm?
In our yt days our music was very refined but for that, we had even less hesitation. We played the arrangements and rhythms that we wanted to do. We hope that it was probably that part of us that is the charm a lot of fans felt. Some fans praised us by saying (we are) “a band that can revive eastern rock” and after hearing that praise it gave us strength.
We felt it at the <Cosmo Rock Concert> but you have a lot a female fans. What do you think RP’s appeal to female fans is? Your flower-like looks? Or you musicality?We don’t have perfect looks, nor are we a band that has perfect music, so isn’t it that the fans see our pure appearances when playing music and have taken a liking to that? From our perspective, having a lot of female fans is a good thing. Haha.
While filming for the <Drawing the Line> MV, Actress Hwang Shinhye’s daughter Lee Jini made an appearance. Moon, James, Sooyoon, you all slyly did well, do you have any thoughts of going into acting?We received acting training and started learning, and it really has it’s charms. Also while learning to act our method of expression when we sing also got a lot better. The three of us enjoy watching movies or dramas, so if we ever find the time and opportunity (to act) we want to try.
What is the most memorable thing that has happened, from all the concerts you’ve done up until now?
When we were performing in LA there were fans who came from far away who came wearing pirate outfits. They were cute. Also, a week before our performances in America, we were practicing and suddenly Moon hit James’ eyebrow with his guitar and he had to go to the emergency room. He needed about eight stitches, then, and that memory has really stuck. Sorry James.
What does the future hold for the Royal Pirates?
We think we’ll be coming out with another single. If there is an opportunity, at the end of the month we want to have a small solo performance. In the future we’ll meet you with RP’s continuously developing music. Like you are now, please give us lots of support!
